Advanced 10-Hour CPD Programme

Develop advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic and management skills to support confident clinical decision-making in adult COPD, using the latest evidence and national guidance.

This advanced 6-week blended learning programme is designed for healthcare professionals with existing experience in COPD who want to strengthen their ability to assess complex presentations, make a timely and accurate diagnosis, individualise treatment and manage patients across the COPD pathway.

Learning combines interactive e-learning, videos, case studies and live, case-based webinars, with a strong focus on applying evidence and guidance to realistic clinical scenarios.

On successful completion of all programme elements, delegates will receive a Certificate of Completion for 10 hours of CPD.

This programme is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis, assessment and management of patients with COPD, including but not exclusive to:

Please note: This is an advanced module and is intended for clinicians who already have a basic understanding of COPD diagnosis and management.

If you are new to COPD, we recommend completing our Introduction to COPD webinar before progressing to this programme. A dedicated Foundations in COPD programme is also in development to provide a structured learning pathway for clinicians new to respiratory care.

Each unit follows the same structure:

• Self-paced e-learning (approximately 2 hours to complete over 2 weeks before the love webinar)

• Live interactive webinar (1 hour) Case-based discussion and application of learning

• Opportunity to ask questions throughout

Learning Outcomes

 

This programme focuses on developing clinical decision-making skills through the application of current evidence and guideline-based care to realistic primary care scenarios.

 

By the end of this programme, you will be able to:

​

• Apply the latest evidence-based COPD guidance to support safe, effective clinical decision-making.

​

• Evaluate the pathophysiology of COPD and its impact on patients, healthcare services and wider society to inform clinical assessment and management.

​

• Undertake a comprehensive clinical assessment, interpret diagnostic investigations, including spirometry, and make a timely and accurate diagnosis of COPD.

​

• Optimise pharmacological treatment by personalising therapy according to symptoms, exacerbation risk and individual patient needs.

​

• Implement evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions, including smoking cessation, pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccinations and the identification and management of comorbidities, to improve patient outcomes.

​

• Identify patients at increased risk of exacerbations, hospital admission or disease progression and implement strategies to reduce future risk, recognising when specialist referral is appropriate.

​

• Deliver structured, evidence-based COPD reviews using a holistic, patient-centred approach to optimise long-term disease management.

​

• Assess and manage acute exacerbations of COPD in line with current national guidance, recognising advanced disease and when palliative or supportive care should be considered.

​

• Develop personalised supported self-management plans that empower patients, improve quality of life and reduce exacerbations and avoidable hospital admissions.

This programme is currently supported by the pharmaceutical industry, enabling places to be offered at a reduced cost.

As part of this support, one pharmaceutical company will deliver a 10-minute presentation at the beginning of each live webinar. The educational content of the programme remains independent and evidence-based.
